Match Report: Sporting Hackney 1-0 South Kilburn
Sporting Hackney maintained their unbeaten start to the season on Saturday with a deserved 1-0 win over a spirited South Kilburn side on a muggy afternoon at the Marshes.
A second half strike from Yusuff “Wazza” Olajide was enough to secure victory for the Parrots, who had opportunities to kill the game off before having to survive some sustained pressure late on.
The win means the Parrots now have seven points from their opening three matches in the Middlesex County Premier League under returning manager Pete Harrington.
The visitors began the game with enthusiasm, putting in some strong challenges and testing captain Liam O’Hara’s defense with some searching long balls.
But the Parrots soon settled into the game, absorbing opposition pressure and looking dangerous in attack in wide areas.
Yousseff, who battled tirelessly throughout the game, had the best chance of the first half, working himself in a good position in the left hand side of the box only to see his effort drift wide of the far post.
The introductions of Jon Green and Chris Monaghan after the break added sharpness to Hackney’s attacking play and Olajide's hard work was eventually rewarded midway through the second half.
The striker netted his first goal of the season, slipping the ball into the bottom left-hand corner of the net, assisted by a clean through pass from Green.
The home side should’ve added more with substitute Ruben Alves penetrating forcefully down the left flank towards to byline but firing over from a tight angle.
South Kilburn brought on more attackers as they sought an equaliser late in the game but Parrots keeper Nick Leo snuffed out their best opportunity.
Hackney now face Deportivo Galicia at home in the league next Saturday as they seek to build on their impressive start to the season.
