MATCH REPORT: SPORTING HACKNEY 2-3 DEPORTIVO GALICIA
A five-minute lapse just before half time meant Sporting Hackney suffered their first defeat of the season as they let a two-goal lead slip at home to league leaders Deportivo Galicia.
An early strike from Justin Robson and a Yusuf Olajide penalty put Hackney in front as the interval approached but the visitors – who now have 15 points from their opening six matches – probed continually, scoring two in quick succession and adding a third in the second half.
Hackney now sit 9th in the Middlesex County Premier League, after surrendering their status as one of only two unbeaten teams in the division.
After two comfortable wins, the visit of table-toppers Deportivo was always going to be the season’s first big test for a Hackney side rediscovering itself since manager Pete Harrington’s recent return.
But they looked up to the task when midfielder Justin Robson found himself in space outside the box and stroked the ball into the bottom right hand-corner to record his first goal of the season.
Hackney then ramped up the pressure, launching teasing crosses and set pieces into Deportivo’s box. One landed at the feet of Jon Green, who faked to pass, fooling the defender into bringing him down. Olajide sent the 'keeper the wrong way from 12 yards and Hackney looked in command.
But the visitors soon showed their ruthlessness, getting in behind the Parrots backline and scoring from their first two chances. And they could have added more. The third came around the hour – a powerful strike from inside the box that left Parrots keeper Nic Leo no chance.
The Parrots searched for an equaliser and had the ball in the net twice late on but both Olajide and Green were ruled offside – the latter a very close call.
Hackney will look to return to winning ways on Saturday as they host FC Assyria in the Alec Smith cup.
